‘Something to celebrate;’ Cameco’s northern scholarships reflect students’ accomplishments

Kayelyn Rasmussen says she enjoyed learning how to be a heavy-duty mechanic.

“I wanted to get into it because I like equipment and I like seeing how things run,” she says.

“It’s really hands-on and you learn a lot while doing the job. It's nice to be able to go out on calls and either be in the bush working on that kind of equipment or going out wherever crews need you to fix equipment. It's cool because you get to see everywhere, but then you can also work in the shop by yourself too, which is nice.”

Rasmussen, of Green Lake, recently finished a heavy- duty mechanic course through Northwest College, which included a practicum with the Ministry of Highways.

She completed her course this spring with the support of Cameco’s Northern Saskatchewan Scholarship. For the summer she hopes to land a job with the ministry or at a Cameco site.

"It really helped me financially because I had to drive half an hour, it really helped with gas. And if I needed new work boots or coveralls or anything like that, it really helped me too.”

Cameco is accepting applications for our 2025 Northern Saskatchewan Scholarship from June 16 to July 31. The scholarship recognizes and supports students who are residents of Saskatchewan’s North (RSN) in their pursuit of post-secondary education. Annual scholarships of up to $5,000 are open to RSN students attending one or two-year technical programs, or one-to-four-year university programs. Programs with a focus on the mining industry – such as environmental geoscience, civil engineering and welding – are preferred.

Kristin Cuddington, Director and past NSK Scholarship recipient

Kristin Cuddington, director, community and Indigenous engagement with Corporate and Community Relations, herself received a Cameco scholarship when she was a student.

Cuddington, from La Ronge, used it to help fund her political science degree.

“My family lived in the north. I couldn’t live at home; I had to move away to pursue my education. When you think about your tuition and books in addition to accommodations, transportation and incidentals, it really is a lot for students to manage."

“Scholarships are so impactful because they really open doors, remove some of these barriers, and help provide the resources for students to not worry about whether they have enough money to buy books, and have a place to live, and eat, so they can focus on their studies.”

Cuddington says Cameco is proud to help students succeed.

“They're there because of the work they put in at school. It's not our accomplishment. It's the student's accomplishment. They should be really proud of themselves. If in some way we can support that, that is something to celebrate.”
